Allergy & hayfever are characterised by sneezing, a runny nose, nasal itching and congestion, and sinus pain. Allergic rhinitis occurs when the lining of the nose becomes inflamed because of an over-reaction to a normally harmless substance. Hayfever is a lay term for allergic rhinitis.
When you have rhinitis, the inside of your nose becomes swollen and itchy. This usually occurs during spring and summer when it is caused by breathing pollens from grasses or trees. This condition is called hayfever. Some people get problems all the year round and this is called perennial rhinitis. It is often due to house dust mites or animals such as cats or dogs.
There are a number of 'Over The Counter' treatments for allergies:
• Intranasal Corticosteroid (INCS)
• Antihistamine tablets and sprays
• Decongestant sprays
INCS treat allergy symptoms better than antihistamine tablets for people who
have persistent symptoms, have moderate to severe symptoms (persistent or intermittent) or experience nasal congestion as an allergy symptom. Decongestants only relieve nasal congestion. INCS are indicated for treatment and prevention.
