Although there have been no cases of polio in Australia for more than 25 years, it is critical that immunisation be maintained to stop the reemergence of this often deadly disease.

Many cases of pertussis 'whooping cough' are now in adults. The symptoms of whooping cough can last for up to 6 months. Young babies are at risk from contracting whooping cough from a close family member. Whooping cough in babies can be fatal.

Tetanus is most common in adults - Australia has around 10 cases a year, of which at least one person will die. Most case of tetanus in Australia are in the over 50 age group.
